PNG introduced digital banking ID and possibly biometric voting system

Around 9 million people call Papua New Guinea (PNG) home. There are 600 separate islands, making the total land area of Papua New Guinea 452,860 km2. Some PNGens also have Micronesian or Polynesian ancestry, although the majority are Melanesians. PNG is looking towards biometric voting and has recently adopted digital banking IDs for banks.

An entirely new biometric voting system will soon be implemented in Papua New Guinea.

According to a recent article in the National, the government of Papua New Guinea is considering implementing biometric voting in future elections. In answer to questioning from the opposition, Prime Minister James Marape claimed that after next year's census, it will be simpler to deploy the biometric voting method.

James Marape has indicated that he wants to use biometric voting in the upcoming election. As Marape sees it, this will be greatly simplified by the government's planned census in the near future. The National quotes Marape as saying, "We want them to have full funds and perform a thorough examination into what occurred this year and in earlier elections dating back to 2007. We need them to put up a well-informed, evidence-based plan for the elections in 2027 and beyond. The biometric system will make use of the Papua New Guinea National Identification (NID) system, as approved by the country's president.

Biometric voting technology was brought up, and Marape said it was only a proposal for now. He said, "By 2023, the plan ought to be complete enough to submit. Adoption is a topic that should be taken up by the government. Joseph Lelang, the leader of the opposition, grilled Marape on the current state of the review of the electoral process and the significance of proper identification of individuals in relation to voting. Marape has pledged that biometric voting will be introduced via the NID system. That way, they may look into everything that has happened since the election in 2007 with no limits on their budget, which is something we strongly support. "We want them to give us a data-driven, well-reasoned advice for how we should organize elections in 2027 and beyond," he added.
